About the Artist

In 1990, Joan von Ungern-Sternberg had a first contact with fused glass during an extended stay in Australia. She was particularly touched by the style of Klaus Moje.

In 1992, during a sabbatical in San Diego/California, she perfected her knowledge and produced her first pieces of art with the artist Gil Reynolds, Portland/Oregon. In the same year she met with Patty van Asperen in Hawaii, who had a considerable influence on her work.

On her return to Switzerland, she started creating in her own studio near Lausanne. Fascinated by the translucency, the effects of the light and the transparence of the glass reflecting, her hands express her ideas.

In 1996, Joan returned to the United States to perfect her technique in “glass casting” with Phil Teefy and Debra von Tol in Portland/Oregon.

In 2001, she was delighted to be able to further her studies in the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning/New York. She participates in numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad.
